Audubon Ohio
2008 Cleveland Nature Day Camp Educator

Audubon
Ohio, the Ohio program of the National Audubon Society (www.audubon.org), is seeking qualified applicants to serve as educators for its “Urban Conservation Crew” day camp at the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland.   Now planning its second summer, the UCC provides children entering grades 3-5 with a five-week introduction to the birds and plants of their neighborhood, using the facilities of the Greenhouse and its location in the midst of Audubon’s Doan Brook/Dike 14 Important Bird Area.

The camp will run from June 30 through August 6, 2008, and our two educators will begin work on June 14 to prepare for the camp opening.
  (One of the two educators may begin earlier than June 14 as time permits).  Educators work 38 hours per week.  The camp operates from 9 a.m. to noon four days a week, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. one day per week (on which a field trip away from the Greenhouse is conducted).

Through a combination of classroom work, games and a lot of time outdoors, campers learn to identify the common birds of their neighborhood, the plants that can be grown in the neighborhood, and how nature exists right in their midst.
   Thus the successful applicant will have the following qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in education or the natural sciences;
  • At least two years of experience working with elementary school-age children;
  • (By the time the camp starts) a basic working knowledge of common urban birds and plants found in the central city; and
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to conveying a sense of wonder about the natural world.

Applicants should submit a resume and statement of interest to Audubon Ohio Executive Director Jerry Tinianow at jtinianow@audubon.org.  For more information, please contact Jerry at 614-224-3303.
