The Environmental Education Center of Cuyahoga Valley
National Park Association is nestled in scenic Cuyahoga
Valley National Park (CVNP), located in northeastern
Ohio, stretching from
Cleveland to Akron.
The
Environmental
Education
Center
is a partnership between the National Park Service and
Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association, a non-profit
organization. The residential facility includes two
dormitories with gender-separate rooms and modern
bathroom facilities, plus dining halls, science
laboratories, a computer laboratory with a library, an
art room, and activity spaces.
These buildings complement the 500 acres of
surrounding woods, meadows, ponds, streams and the
Cuyahoga
River.
Field Instructor responsibilities
include:
- Participate in a comprehensive
3-week training and attend professional development
workshops once a week;
- Be a member of a team of interns;
- Lead morning, afternoon and
evening instructional units using the field, labs,
and activity areas;
- Teach Day Programs and
participate in our special programming;
- Participate in all class sessions
and complete assignments in the Field Instructor
academic program at CVEEC (required to receive
University of Akron graduate credits);
- Participate in professional
development opportunities (e.g. conferences or
workshops) as these are made available to Field
Instructor staff;
- Contribute to other aspects of
operation at a residential environmental education
center.
This is
a highly intensive, but highly rewarding experience;
expect to work 50-60 hours per week.
This nine-month internship term is August 11,
2008 through June 5, 2009. Interns are not responsible
for students after the conclusion of evening programs,
and supervisory responsibility is shared at all times
with teachers.
Qualifications:
The
successful applicant should demonstrate an interest and
knowledge of the environment and/or the arts and possess
a sincere desire to work with elementary and middle
school students in an intensive and rewarding
educational setting. Experience
in environmental issues, science, arts, education, or
comparable experience working with children is
preferred.
The ability to establish a good rapport with both
students and classroom teachers is important.
Basic computer proficiency is preferred.
In addition, the applicant should be enthusiastic
about the interdisciplinary approach of the program.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
Background/fingerprint check, and First Aid and
CPR certification are required.
Stipend and Benefits:
A weekly
stipend of $215 is provided.
Furnished housing and utilities are provided
separate from the Environmental Education
Center in the historic village of Everett.
Meals are provided when food service is provided
for visitor groups.
Short-term medical insurance is provided.
Field Instructors have an opportunity to earn 10
non-degree graduate credits through the University of Akron.

Summer Camp Counselors
The
Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association offers a
variety of day and overnight camps for children ranging
in ages 6-17 in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in
northeast Ohio. Our goal is for campers to learn more
about the environment, the arts, themselves and their
world. We stress individual growth and group cooperation
in residential and day camp settings. Campers will enjoy
a curriculum concentrating on appreciation and
understanding of the arts and the environment, as well
as take part in recreational opportunities including
swimming, hiking, biking and campfires. Participants
will also make new friends and take on new
responsibilities while building a positive camp

Position Description:
·
Participate in our week-long pre-camp training.
·
Implement the purpose, goals, and objectives of all
CVNPA camps and summer programs.
·
Live
in the dormitory and assume responsibility for overnight
camper supervision.
·
Provide leadership and guidance to campers in daily
living with special attention to: safety, health and
welfare, personal hygiene, respect and discipline, and
camper participation in all camp activities and meals.
·
Assist teaching faculty of summer camps in camp
activities.
·
Create and facilitate evening and themed programming for
large and small groups of campers
·
Assume responsibility for interpreting the policies and
procedures of the
Environmental Education Center and Cuyahoga Valley
National Park to campers.
·
Serve as a positive role model in making good decisions
and implementing effective practices for campers and
fellow staff.
·
Transition between day, residential, or other summer
programs in the park.
·
Participate, as a team member, in the guidance of
campers in daily activities.
·
Perform related work as required.
·
Counselors with appropriate skills may be asked to
assume additional responsibilities.
Term:
June 8th –
August 1st, 2008.
Training will take place for one week, beginning
June 8, 2008.
Camp sessions run June 15th – August 1st,
2008.
Qualifications:
Minimum: 18 years of
age, at least one year of college or equivalent
experience. Interest in leading young people and
expanding their appreciation of the arts and the
environment.
Enthusiasm, flexibility, tolerance, creativity and good
physical health required. Demonstrated leadership
abilities.
Preferred: background in the arts, environment, or
education and experience as a camper or counselor.
Background/fingerprint check, First Aid & CPR
Certification, valid driver's license required.
Pay and Benefits:
Camp counselor salary is
$200/week.
Housing provided in the Environmental Education Center’s
dormitories during training and camp.
Meals are provided when campers are in residence.
Limited medical insurance is provided.

Audubon Ohio
2008 Cleveland Nature Day Camp Educator
Audubon
Ohio,
the
Ohio program of
the National Audubon Society (www.audubon.org),
is seeking qualified applicants to serve as educators
for its “Urban Conservation Crew” day camp at the
Rockefeller Park Greenhouse in the Glenville
neighborhood of
Cleveland.
Now planning its second
summer, the UCC provides children entering grades 3-5
with a five-week introduction to the birds and plants of
their neighborhood, using the facilities of the
Greenhouse and its location in the midst of Audubon’s
Doan Brook/Dike 14 Important Bird Area.
The camp will run from June 30 through August 6, 2008,
and our two educators will begin work on June 14 to
prepare for the camp opening.
(One of the two educators
may begin earlier than June 14 as time permits).
Educators work 38 hours per
week.
The camp operates from 9
a.m. to noon four days a week, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
one day per week (on which a field trip away from the
Greenhouse is conducted).
Through a combination of classroom work, games and a lot
of time outdoors, campers learn to identify the common
birds of their neighborhood, the plants that can be
grown in the neighborhood, and how nature exists right
in their midst.
Thus the successful
applicant will have the following qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in education or the natural
sciences;
-
At least two years of experience working with
elementary school-age children;
-
(By the time the camp starts) a basic working
knowledge of common urban birds and plants found in
the central city; and
-
Enthusiasm for and commitment to conveying a sense
of wonder about the natural world.

Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center
Become a Naturalist! The Glen Helen Outdoor Education
Center is searching for
Naturalist Interns to teach students in our school camp
program. The Outdoor Education
Center is situated in the beautiful Glen Helen Nature
Preserve, which spans over 1,000 acres of
protected forests, wetlands, and
prairies. Geological features include valleys
formed by glacial melt waters,
cascades, ledges, and the natural spring from which the
neighboring village gets its name. Facilities
include student dorms, staff
housing, day lodge, a small museum, and nationally
recognized raptor
rehabilitation center. We are recruiting Naturalist
Interns for our fall '08 term
from August through
mid December. Initial
transportation to the Glen is the responsibility of
interns, however the village
of Yellow Springs is within walking distance and a
vehicle during the program is
not required. We are not able to host children or pets
in our staff housing.
International residents are encouraged to apply, though
fluent English skills are necessary.

Eagerness to learn about wildlife and natural resources
A minimum of two years of college in wildlife science,
forestry, outdoor recreation, environmental education,
conservation, biology, etc.
Ability to relate to people of all ages in a positive
manner
Well-developed written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of natural ecosystems, native wildlife and
conservation issues
High level of motivation and enthusiasm regarding
wildlife and teaching
Communications and public relations capability –
written, verbal, telephone
Computer skills spreadsheets, database, word processing,

Ability to work well on a team
Ability to swim, hike, climb, and bush-whack
Ability to supervise safety and participate in outdoor
recreational activities
Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness

Compensation:
$300-350/week
Housing provided for a $50/week

Wilds Conservation Education
Internships -CEIs
Minimum Requirements for CEIs
Ø
Volunteer for at least 2 consecutive weeks during the
spring, summer, or fall period
(approx = 90
hours);
Ø
Must be age 18 or older;
Ø
Must be currently enrolled or intending to pursue
college education in the Natural Resources,
Environmental Interpretation, Education, Outdoor
Recreation, Wildlife Management, or Biology fields of
study;
Ø
Must be willing to work with campers, wildlife, and
Wilds visitors to reflect a positive and professional
image for the Wilds;
Ø
Must be willing to attend training, sign volunteer
waivers, and accept a criminal background check; Note:
CEIs will be required to pay $35 for their CBG
check.
Wilds CEIs
will assist wilds Naturalists with:
Ø
Interpretive programs,
Ø
Encouraging appreciation of the natural world,
Ø
Wildlife research,
Ø
Wilds Safari tours,
Ø
Restoration of habitats,
Ø
Maintenance
of trails and camp facilities,
Ø
Operate camp vehicles;
And will agree to:
Ø
follow Wilds protocol and rules as trained;
Ø
report for duty as scheduled or find substitute interns;
Wilds CEIs
will report to the Conservation Educator and/or Camp Coordinator.
At the end of their field season with the Wilds
each intern will be expected to write a brief report of
their work, their perspective on the importance of the
volunteer work that they performed, and offer
suggestions for improvement of the CEI program and other
Wilds programs.
The CEI program offers interested individuals the
opportunity to learn and gain practical experience in
wildlife conservation and environmental education.
It is not a position that accrues merit or
compensation.
The Education Department of the Wilds hopes that
these individuals will be future Naturalists, Educators,
and Biologists for the Wilds,
Ohio, and future generations.
