Preservice Teacher Education

Preservice professional development includes formal education, training, or other learning activities individuals engage in as they prepare to enter a chosen profession. In Ohio, 51 colleges and universities prepare students to become certified classroom teachers. Preparing new classroom teachers in environmental education (EE) is an important step in ensuring that EE in Ohio is of high quality for learners of all ages. Early in 2001, EEOhio conducted a study to determine how much environmental education is included in the teacher training programs in Ohio. Click here to learn more.

The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) has developed
Guidelines for the Initial Preparation of Environmental Educators a set of recommended Guidelines for the preservice preparation of teachers and other environmental educators. These Guidelines present recommendations about the basic knowledge and abilities educators need to provide high quality EE.
