Beyond th Classroom

Ohio has been a leader in early childhood environmental education (EE) through the work of Dr. Ruth Wilson, author of Fostering A Sense of Wonder During the Early Childhood Years. This curriculum Guide emphasizes the importance of direct experiences with nature for young children. Our Best Practices for Environmental Education Guide also draws from Ruth’s work in providing recommendations for EE with this age group.

How do we foster a sense of wonder for young children?
Here are some tips:

Consult your local yellow pages for field trip opportunities. For example, local farms
and greenhouses are wonderful places for young children to visit.
Work with your local librarian to identify high quality children’s literature related to
the environment.
